ARE WE LOSING OUR PASSION? - 9/3/2010 - by Tim Bryce

Maybe it's just me, but does it seem the majority of people protesting in the Tea and Coffee parties are either Baby Boomers or older? When you watch Town Hall meetings on television, it seems the audience tends to be older as well. I find it interesting these people seem to be more politically engaged than younger people. Maybe it's because we have had more practice. Going back to the 1960's and 70's, we were engaged with what was going on in the world; for example, we were active in such things as Zero Population Growth and Earth Day, not to mention the Viet Nam War and Civil Rights. When the age to vote was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1972, young people surged to the precincts, but interest in the electoral process slowly deteriorated over the years.

To me, it seems the Gen Xers and younger simply do not care; they are not engaged. I find this rather strange and perhaps another symptom of the generational split in our country. The young people entering the work force today strike me as rather apathetic and really do not wish to debate the issues of the day. Instead, I see quite a few parroting whatever the media tells them to say. When I challenge them on a remark they have made, such as "Why?", I generally get a blank look and an evasive answer. I don't have a problem with a person taking an opposing position, but they should be able to articulate the rationale for their position. I do not see the passion which drove the political discourse 40-50 years ago. Is it necessary for mom and dad to tell them what to think or does everything have to be scripted by television?

When I was growing up, we discussed just about everything around the dinner table, be it politics, religion, school, sex, drugs, sports, ethics, world events, or whatever. True, our parents made their positions clear to us, but it was more important to them to have their children engage their brains and learn to question and think for themselves which means, No, we didn't always agree, but we learned to respect the opinion of others. I don't know too many families who do this anymore. It seems a shame to me that the dinner table is used for nothing but eating.

Another area that concerns me is the short attention span of American voters. There was substantial outrage this year over Obamacare, the stimulus packages and bailouts, the growing national debt, the oil disaster in the Gulf, and our general lack of direction. I'll be curious though to see what the voter turnout will be in November. A good turnout will mean people have a good memory and politicians should be forewarned for the 2012 elections. However, if there is a bad turnout, it will mean "Business as Usual" for politicians. If this happens, I think a lot of crybabies should just shutup. I can't help but believe a lot of what we are experiencing could have been avoided had people not become apathetic and failed to vote in the last election, both young and old.

FEEDBACK

ARE WE LOSING OUR PASSION? - September 3rd

A T.W. of Moundsville, West Virginia wrote...

"I think corruption in government is one explanation for apathy in general, but particularly in young people! Good article."

A B.P. of Baltimore, Maryland wrote...

"Tim, I agree completely with your take on this generation. I am sorry to say my kids who are parents and accomplished don't seem to have the time or inclination to get involved. It drives me out of my mind, because these are very, very dangerous times. I have to apologize to you again. I had every intention of tuning in to your podcast, but I was having a shed built on my property and they kept needing me for one thing or another. It's maddening, but I will try today!"

A W.B. of Arlington, Texas wrote...

"Tim, I think part of the problem with Gen X is they have been educated not to fear those things we grew up fearing. Between high school and college, liberal teachers and professors alike have shown them the romance of socialism and the like. So, they honestly feel America as they know it will continue to exist regardless of what they occupy themselves with throughout life. These are reasonably well-educated people taking a rather ignorant approach to the world they live in by leaving it to others to run. Obama does not represent anything evil to them but simply a new approach to age old problems that old bums like you and me just don't have the smarts to grasp and they are not willling to take the time to spin us up on it. Besides, we don't have that many years to live so why waste time on us? Every human being that has been born since the Berlin Wall fell has little reason to fear the conceptual world. Maybe that's our fault but somehow I counted on our educational system to teach part of it. That was a mistake! Thanks for a good article!"

    A T.C. of Ohio wrote...

"My 21 year old son is in college and is always concerned about politics and social issues. He has voted from the time he was 18. He will vote in November. He has studied capitalism and socialism on his own. He will get an associates degree in Industrial Business Management and then plans to finish his educational goals in Environmental Management studies. He is intelligent enough to know that manufacturing is and will remain part of the environment. He has been bombarded throughout school with liberal ideals...yet...his sense of logic tends to weed out the wacky.

I think you hit the key, 'apathy' in your article. We need to start raising our children again instead of letting the popular world raise them. We have to teach them to hope and envision a better future through their work. If we don't, there may not be a future."

An S.B. of New York City wrote...

"Look on the bright side, if the young people voted, they'd vote liberal. Let them stay home until they're older and have an investment in their country."

    MEDIA PIGS - September 2nd

A T.W. of Moundsville, West Virginia wrote...

"Great article. Life is to short to waste on those who practice self aggrandizement!"

A B.P. of Baltimore, Maryland wrote...

"Your take on the Rev. Al is spot on. It has always been about him and if he doesn't have a cause he makes one up. Sorry I missed the broadcast again. I was determined to tune in and suddenly my house was filled with hot people (sweating) who wanted to jump in my pool. I am shooting for this morning."

An S.B. of New York City wrote...

"Small towns have them, too. Go anywhere and buy the local paper. Look at the pictures. The person you see in the largest number of photos is the local politician."

A W.B. of Arlington, Texas wrote...

"Hey Tim, let's cut to the chase here. For many of these pigs, its the way the make their living and a damn fine one in too many cases. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson thrive on racial strife...it is the production mechanism of their wealth. Never mind that they sell themselves as facilitators, bridgebuilders, problem-solvers. The fact of the matter is when these conflicts occur, more times than not, they find a way to make money out of it. That is shameful. The great thing that is happening is that the black race has figured it out and they are losing ground in that area. Jesse and Al are attempting to appeal to the Hispanic sector to keep their money-making efforts alive. Black people have learned to think for themselves and do not need Al and Jesse to tell them what to think. Thank God for that. Let's just hope the Hispanic population wises up as quickly."

A P.E. of Freehold, New Jersey wrote...

"Just hearing Rev. Al Sharpton's name makes my blood boil. This man was responsible for harming the reputations of so many lives during the bogus Tawana Brawley affair. One man took his own life. To this day I have yet to hear Sharpton apologize for this fiasco. Without chaos Sharpton would be unemployed."

    "I BELIEVE..." - September 1st

A T.W. of Moundsville, West Virginia wrote...

    "Amen Tim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

A W.B. of Arlington, Texas wrote...

"You covered my sentiments better than I could Tim...great job on this one. It should make for a good subject matter on your Wednesday show. Thanks for sharing!"

A P.K. of Dunedin, Florida wrote...

"Tim, this is really good. I believe what you wrote. Thanks for taking the time to do what you are doing."

OUR PERMANENT RECORD - August 31st

A T.W. of Moundsville, West Virginia wrote...

I gave up trying to please people on this Earth. I want to keep my record clean with The Creator! Great article."

A B.P. of Baltimore, Maryland wrote...

"Big Brother is everywhere and about to grow some more. I just heard that the Internet is now tracking every move we make. A woman visited the Zappos site and looked at a pair of shoes. She decided not to purchase them and moved on. Those shoes followed her everywhere she went on the net, popping up at every twist and turn. Scary!"

A J.S. of Skidway Lake, Michigan wrote...

"Although we cannot outrun our permanent records, we can live our lives in such a way that our good behavior outshines our youthful mistakes."

    An R.R. of Oregon wrote...

"Hitler is grinning from his grave. His wishes coming true of a society he only dreamed of, now it is more and more of a reality than any of us like to admit. We understand that negativity is remembered much more than positivity. We understand now that society in a whole, and as separate groups is a science. We understand our children are being taught to tell on each other, and family members. Telling authority figures IE the government is everyday life for many. I look at such things as our permanent records as a piece to a somewhat complicated puzzle. Only a small piece, but when put together makes a very clear picture on life in a "free" country as America was intended to be, but as we see freedom is becoming very hard to get. Hitler would be proud to see how we are turning out......"

"The Blog description is so right. You might not always agree with Tim but he always makes you stop and think,
and I mean universally. Even being from Finland, the topics are so relevant that it is a pleasure to ponder them."

- Timo Kettunen, Finland

"A couple of months ago, I clicked on a hot article by Tim Bryce. I liked what I read so I went to his site to read more and I am so glad that I did. Tim is one of those folks I call a "sleeper". He is here but he just goes quietly about his craft not necessarily seeking or needing anything from anyone. He is one of those people that you just instantly like. Judging from the way he writes, I really believe that he has the ability to bring some order and understanding into just about any state of chaos. He can attack most any subject and take it from a new perspective. It will always be interesting. He can be very objective and fair but I suspect that he can tell it like it is when he wants to do that. He writes in a way that just inspires. He slowly takes things apart and puts them back together right before your eyes. When he finishes with a subject, you really understand it or you really understand how you feel about it. He still believes in those things that made America great, work ethic, honor, duty, your word, consideration for your fellowman. When you read his work, you will believe in those things as well. Tim can get any subject down to the reader's level and get the intimidation out of it for the reader. He does that by creating an empathy with his reader and he does it well. Just reading his work has created a lot of reader awareness in me for my writing. If you have doubts, go to his site and read the piece on cigars. You will see. If I were directing a hostage crisis or mediating a labor contract, I would want Tim Bryce with me. I'd win too!"
